| Article Review Derby Evening Telegraph 3/9/2009 COACHES who teach a popular Chinese practice designed to help people live long and prosper will pay a visit to Derby this month. Lu Shining, vice-president of the Chinese Health Qigong Association, wants the practice to become popular in the UK and will visit England. He will be accompanied by five of the country's best Qigong coaches, some of whom will hold a seminar at Derby's Quad. Carol Gascoyne, who is a qualified Qigong instructor and holds sessions across Derbyshire, said the delegation's visit presented an exciting opportunity for people. She said: "Qigong is a very gentle relaxation exercising technique. It has numerous health benefits. "Not many people know about Qigong and this is a great opportunity for people to take part and find out why it is so popular in China. "Instructors don't come any better – they're the best in the world, so I'm very excited about the delegation's visit." The coaches teach Qigong at leading sports institutions in China and are coming to England to promote the discipline. They will visit London, Wolverhampton, St Helens and Scotland as well as Derby, where they will be greeted by the city's mayor, Sean Marshall, in a reception at The Council House on September 25. A seminar will then be held at the Quad, in the Market Place, between 6pm and 9pm. Ms Gascoyne, who lives in Little Eaton, is encouraging people to attend. Similar to Tai Chi, Qigong involves slower "graceful" movements along with controlled breathing techniques to help circulate qi – the Chinese word for air – around the body. Researchers say this leads to an improvement in the overall health of those taking part. There are more than 10,000 styles of Qigong and an estimated 200 million people across the world attend regular sessions. People take part to gain strength and improve health, while there are also spiritual aspects of Qigong. The coaches visiting the UK are Cui Hengwu, Liu Yuping, Zhang Yunya, Wang Zhen and Zhang Caiqin. Back |
