| The Master Christian A Chinese man known for his beautiful voice sets out his store to become a great Western Christian. He joins the Church, learns many hymns and tells the vicar of his plan. Every Sunday he sings his heart out . One day the Vicar notices the man sleeps through the sermons and suggests reading a Bible to gain a further insight into Christianity, but the Chinese Man refuses. He doesn’t want to learn about the characters in the book, it would take up to much time. The language is foreign and obscure were as hymns can just be copied. The Chinese man learns many hymns. Friends believe him to be a great Christian as he's always welcomed enthusiastically at the church. Nobody disputes he sounds like an Angel. He wins hymn singing competitions and hangs his certificates on the wall. These are taken as proof of his mastery and soon Chinese students flock to lean from him. The students ask how they can become a Master? In later years he refuses to accept he is a Master Christian at all, but a Master hymn singer. It doesn’t stop the students coming, he sounds like a Christian to them. Their Master must be a very modest man. The Master Hymn Singer is happy too; On reflection he set his store too high to become a Master Christian, the subject was too broad. It would have been better to join a good choir and take singing lessons, but now he knows the breadth of his achievements and instead works on his ignorance. Neil Bradley © 2009 |
